Why African startups should choose PaaS over IaaS

Africa's tech ecosystem is booming. Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar, Abidjan, Cairo: startups are multiplying and raising record rounds.

But we keep seeing the same pattern. A team of four developers raises a pre-seed, builds a solid product locally, then spends three weeks fighting AWS to get into production. Three weeks in which the product does not move forward. Three weeks in which the competitor ships.

It is an infrastructure problem. And we believe PaaS is the answer for the large majority of African startups.

IaaS vs PaaS: two very different philosophies

IaaS (AWS, GCP, Azure): you run everything

IaaS gives you raw virtual machines. Everything on top is yours to build:

# What YOU have to manage on IaaS
$ ssh root@my-server
$ apt update && apt install nginx nodejs postgresql
$ nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/myapp    # reverse proxy
$ certbot --nginx -d myapp.com             # SSL
$ systemctl enable myapp # service
$ crontab -e                               # backups
$ apt install prometheus grafana # monitoring
# ... and maintain all of it. Every week.

It is like renting an empty plot of land: you have the space, but you build the house, the wiring, the plumbing and the alarm yourself.

PaaS: you focus on the code

A PaaS gives you a ready-made platform. You push your code, it handles the rest.

$ git push origin main
# That's it. In production, with SSL, monitoring and backups.

It is a furnished flat. You arrive with your things and start living.

Five concrete reasons to choose PaaS

1. DevOps talent is scarce (and expensive)

In Africa, a senior DevOps engineer costs between 1,500,000 and 3,000,000 FCFA a month. And they are in high demand: large companies absorb them quickly.

With a PaaS, your developers deploy and run the applications without DevOps expertise. A junior developer can put an app into production in five minutes, where an IaaS setup would take days of configuration.

The potential saving? Six months of a DevOps salary — 9 to 18 million FCFA. Enough to fund a fair few features.

2. Billing in dollars is a real problem

AWS, GCP and Azure bill in dollars. For an African startup, that means:

  • Unpredictable costs, because of FCFA/USD fluctuation
  • African Visa and Mastercard cards that often carry limits or extra fees
  • Opaque pricing (an AWS invoice is a maze)
# A typical AWS invoice (the monthly surprise)
EC2 instances:             $47.23
EBS storage:               $12.40
Data Transfer OUT:          $8.72
NAT Gateway processing:     $6.15
Route 53 queries:           $2.30
CloudWatch:                 $4.89
─────────────────────────────────
Total:                     $81.69 → ~50,500 FCFA (variable rate)

# A Nubiecloud invoice
Pro plan:                  145,000 FCFA/month
─────────────────────────────────
Total:                     145,000 FCFA. Full stop.

We bill in FCFA at fixed rates. No nasty surprise at the end of the month.

3. Time to market is critical

In a competitive ecosystem, every week spent configuring infrastructure is a week in which your competitor moves ahead.

TaskIaaS (AWS)PaaS (Nubiecloud)
First deployment2-5 days5 minutes
Staging environment1-2 days2 minutes
Database30 min - 2h2 minutes
SSL configuration1-4hAutomatic
Monitoring setup1-2 daysBuilt in

Over a year, that adds up to entire weeks given back to product development.

4. Security is built in, not optional

Configuring security on AWS is a job of its own: security groups, NACLs, IAM policies, encryption, VPCs. One mistake and your data is exposed. Incidents involving public S3 buckets or badly configured security groups make the news regularly.

On Nubiecloud, it is built in by default: project isolation, a secured network, auto-renewed SSL/TLS, encrypted secrets, DDoS protection, and GDPR compliance with audit logs.

We do not ask you to become a cloud security expert. We handle it.

5. Support that speaks your language

When your application falls over at 2 a.m., having support that speaks French and understands local constraints makes all the difference.

The AWS documentation runs to tens of thousands of pages, in English. Our team is based in Cameroon. We answer in French, we know the connectivity headaches, the payment constraints, the realities on the ground.

The real cost: let's compare the numbers

Take a typical SaaS startup with a Django API, a React frontend and a PostgreSQL database.

IaaS setup (AWS)

ItemMonthly cost
EC2 t3.medium (API)~30,000 FCFA
EC2 t3.small (frontend)~15,000 FCFA
RDS PostgreSQL db.t3.micro~25,000 FCFA
ALB (load balancer)~15,000 FCFA
Data transfer~10,000 FCFA
Route 53 + ACM~5,000 FCFA
CloudWatch~8,000 FCFA
Infrastructure subtotal~108,000 FCFA
DevOps time (20h/month x 15,000 FCFA/h)300,000 FCFA
Real total~408,000 FCFA/month

PaaS setup (Nubiecloud)

ItemMonthly cost
Pro plan (API + frontend + DB)145,000 FCFA
DevOps time0 FCFA
Total145,000 FCFA/month

Saving: 263,000 FCFA a month, or more than 3,100,000 FCFA a year. And that does not even count the development time you get back.

When IaaS is still justified

We will not pretend PaaS is the answer to everything. Moving to IaaS can be justified when your architecture reaches 50-plus microservices, when you face very strict banking compliance constraints, when you have a dedicated DevOps team of three or more, or when your infrastructure budget passes 5,000,000 FCFA a month — economies of scale start to matter at that point.

For most startups between seed and series A, PaaS remains the rational choice.

Africa's ecosystem deserves tools that fit

African startups operate in a particular context: variable connectivity, specific payment methods, multilingual markets, local regulation. They deserve cloud tools designed for that reality, not cut-down versions of American services.

That is exactly why we built Nubiecloud: a platform priced in FCFA, with French-speaking support and an experience designed for African developers.
